NymVPN requests camera access for one reason only: so you can scan a QR code that contains your 24-word access code when you sign in on a mobile device. The camera is never used for anything else. The permission is optional and you can always enter your access code manually instead.
When the permission is requested
The mobile NymVPN app asks for camera access the first time you try to sign in using the "Scan QR code" option. The app does not request the permission at any other time. If you choose "Enter manually" at sign-in, the prompt does not appear.
What scanning a QR code does
Your 24-word access code is long and easy to mistype on a mobile keyboard. Rather than typing all 24 words, you can:
- Go to nym.com/account/login on your desktop or laptop browser.
- Sign in there and navigate to your access code.
- Choose "Show QR code".
- Open the NymVPN mobile app, tap "Scan QR code", and point your camera at the screen.
The app reads the 24 words from the QR code locally on your device. The image never leaves your phone, and Nym does not receive it.
Privacy by design
- The camera feed stays on your device. NymVPN does not upload, stream, or retain camera input. The QR code is decoded locally and the camera is released immediately after.
- No background access. The camera is only active while you're on the "Scan QR code" screen.
- Optional permission. You can deny camera access and use manual entry without any loss of functionality.
If you'd rather not grant camera access
Choose "Enter manually" on the sign-in screen and type the 24 words. Tip: paste each word from your password manager one at a time, or copy and paste the whole string if your manager supports it.
If you've already granted camera access and want to revoke it
- iOS: Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera > turn off NymVPN.
- Android: Settings > Apps > NymVPN > Permissions > Camera > Don't allow.
Revoking the permission has no effect on your subscription or your ability to connect. You'll just be prompted to enter your access code manually next time you sign in on that device.
