When you create your NymVPN plan, you’ll receive a 24-word access code. This phrase replaces the traditional email and password combination and serves as your private key in an asymmetric encryption keypair, where your NymVPN account ID acts as the corresponding public key.
Your access code never leaves your device, only you have control over your private key. Nym cannot see, store, or recover it. This means your account access is fully decentralized and private. Even Nym cannot impersonate you or view your data.
No personal data required: You don’t need an email or password, reducing your digital footprint.
Zero-knowledge security: Your access code is generated locally in your browser. Nym never receives it.
Cryptographic protection: The access code is the private key in an asymmetric keypair, ensuring secure, verifiable, and private account access.
No central point of failure: Since Nym does not store or manage access codes, there’s no risk of your credentials being leaked or hacked from our side.
Can I choose or change my access code?
For security and privacy reasons access codes cannot be chosen or changed once linked to your NymVPN plan. The access code is generated locally on your browser, so Nym does not store nor has access to any part of it. Please note, that this access code is specific to your NymVPN plan and is not shared with your Nym Wallet mnemonic.
Can I recover my account if I lose my access code?
If you're already logged in on nym.com with the same account, you can go to the Passphrase section in order to recover your 24-word access code.
Unfortunately, because NymVPN does not store or manage access codes, we cannot assist you in recovering a lost code. This is why it’s important to store your access code safely. You can read more about this in our help article for “How do I recover my NymVPN plan if I lost my access code?”.
How should I store my access code?
If you choose to store your access code digitally, consider using an encrypted password manager that you trust. Avoid saving it in email, cloud storage, or digital notes.
Never share your access code with anyone. The NymVPN team will never ask for your access code under any circumstances.
