NymVPN works in Iran for some users, with mixed results depending on ISP and time of day. During internet outages (full or partial blackouts), NymVPN is not reachable like any other internet service. The built-in anti-censorship features (QUIC transport, AmneziaWG) are designed for exactly this environment and significantly improve reliability.
Current status
- Fast mode (AmneziaWG / WireGuard) generally works but reliability varies by ISP. Some Iranian ISPs apply aggressive VPN filtering that can affect connectivity.
- Anonymous mode (5-hop mixnet) is a strong alternative when Fast mode is struggling. Best suited for messaging, secure communications, and crypto transactions where latency matters less than getting through.
- During internet outages, NymVPN cannot connect. VPNs require working internet to a gateway; if your ISP or the country-level network is offline or heavily throttled, no VPN can route through it.
If you can't connect
- Turn on QUIC transport mode. In the NymVPN app, go to Settings > Anti-censorship > toggle QUIC on. This obfuscates the VPN handshake so it looks like ordinary web traffic. See What is QUIC transport mode in NymVPN?
- Try Anonymous mode. If Fast mode is being blocked, switch and try again.
- Try a different network. Mobile data versus Wi-Fi often have very different filtering profiles.
- Try at a different time of day. Filtering aggressiveness can vary throughout the day.
- Wait through outages. If the underlying connectivity is being cut, no VPN can bypass that. Connection becomes possible again when the outage ends.
If the app store is blocked
Some users in Iran have reported limited NymVPN availability on official app stores. Workarounds:
- Android: download the APK directly from nym.com/download/android.
- iOS: if the App Store entry is hidden, try a different App Store region or connect through a different network before downloading.
- Linux, macOS, Windows: installers are available directly from nymvpn.com/download.
