Yes. NymVPN works reliably in many regions of Russia. Local network conditions and ISP behavior do vary, so some users will see better results than others. The built-in anti-censorship features (QUIC transport, AmneziaWG) are designed for exactly this kind of environment.
Current status
- Fast mode (AmneziaWG / WireGuard) generally works well across most Russian ISPs. Occasional connectivity issues happen on networks with aggressive VPN-blocking.
- Anonymous mode (5-hop mixnet) works as a more resilient alternative. The mixnet's traffic patterns differ from typical VPN flows, which helps in restrictive networks. It's slower, so it's best suited for low-bandwidth, latency-tolerant use like messaging, email, secure communications, and crypto transactions.
If you can't connect
- Turn on QUIC transport mode. In the NymVPN app, go to Settings > Anti-censorship > toggle QUIC on. This obfuscates your connection to look like ordinary web traffic, defeating most DPI-based VPN blockers. See What is QUIC transport mode in NymVPN?
- Try Anonymous mode. If Fast mode is being blocked, switch modes and try again.
- Try a different network. Mobile data vs Wi-Fi often have very different filtering behavior in Russia.
- Wait and retry. Filtering rules can change hour by hour.
If the app store is blocked
Some users in Russia have reported limited NymVPN availability on the App Store or Google Play. Workarounds:
- Android: download the APK directly from nym.com/download/android.
- iOS: if the App Store entry is hidden in your region, try downloading from a different App Store region or connect through a different network first.
- Linux, macOS, Windows: installers are available directly from nymvpn.com/download.

Is using a VPN legal in Russia?
VPN legality varies by jurisdiction and changes over time. Make sure you check the current rules where you are.
Which mode should I use?
Try Fast mode with QUIC enabled first. If you can't connect or the connection drops, switch to Anonymous mode.
If nothing works, what should I do?
Contact Nym Support with your NymVPN account ID, the ISP you're using, the mode and network you've tried, and any connection logs from the app. The more detail, the faster we can sort it out.
