When you select an exit location, your traffic leaves the Nym network through a randomly selected exit node in that region, and that node is subject to the local internet rules of wherever it physically sits. If the region censors or restricts certain services, your browsing can inherit those restrictions: sites failing to load, services blocked without warning, or a generally degraded experience. The fix is usually as simple as switching exit location.
Why this happens
NymVPN encrypts and anonymizes your traffic, but once it exits the network it travels the local internet of the exit node's region. An exit node in a country with restrictive internet policies may sit behind national filtering, so requests to blocked services fail even though your VPN connection itself is working perfectly. NymVPN opposes all forms of censorship, but it cannot change what a region's network blocks downstream of the exit.
What to do about it
- Switch to a different exit location. Choosing a region with a free and open internet removes the restrictions immediately.
- Reconnect within the same region. You get a different exit node, which sometimes sits on a less restricted network.
- Check the region's internet freedom record. The Freedom on the Net report, updated annually by Freedom House, scores countries on internet freedom and is a good guide for choosing exits.

Is this the same as a service blocking VPNs?
No. Some services refuse connections they identify as coming from VPNs regardless of region. That looks similar but has a different cause. See Why are certain online services not working with NymVPN?
I am inside a restrictive country. Does this article apply to me?
This article is about restrictions at the exit side. If your own network or country blocks VPN connections, see How to use NymVPN in restricted regions or networks?
Does switching exits affect my privacy?
No. Every exit location gets the same encryption and routing protections. Choose whichever region gives you the best experience.
