How to use NymVPN in restricted regions or networks?

Some networks (workplaces, schools, public Wi-Fi, certain countries) actively interfere with VPN traffic. NymVPN's built-in anti-censorship features (QUIC transport, AmneziaWG) defeat most network-level blocks, and when a connection is stuck the fix is usually one setting away.

Signs you're on a restricted network

  • NymVPN sits on "Connecting" for a long time, or connects then immediately drops.
  • You can't reach the server list, or the connection never completes.
  • It works on mobile data but not on this network, or vice versa.

Step 1: Turn on QUIC transport mode

  1. Open the NymVPN app and tap Settings (⚙️).
  2. Tap Anti-censorship and toggle QUIC on.
  3. Go back and connect again.

QUIC disguises your VPN connection as ordinary web traffic, defeating the deep-packet-inspection most blockers rely on. See What is QUIC transport mode in NymVPN?

Step 2: Try a different mode

  • Fast mode (AmneziaWG, 2-hop): the default and right for most networks; AmneziaWG adds decoy packets to evade WireGuard-blocking signatures.
  • Anonymous mode (5-hop mixnet): more resilient where VPN traffic is aggressively blocked, since the mixnet looks unlike typical VPN flows. Slower, but sometimes the only thing that works. See What's the difference between NymVPN Fast and Anonymous mode?

Step 3: Switch networks if you can

  • Try mobile data instead of Wi-Fi, or vice versa.
  • Try a different Wi-Fi network; hotel and public ones often filter more aggressively than your home connection.
  • Wait a few minutes and retry, since some networks throttle new VPN connections.

If the app store is blocked in your region

  • Android: get the APK from nym.com/download/android.
  • iOS: the App Store is the only channel; if it's blocked, try mobile data on a different network first, or contact support.
  • Linux, macOS, Windows: download installers from nym.com/download.

Contact Nym Support with your account ID (starts with n1), the network type, your region, what you've already tried, and any logs.

⚠️ Important: Never share your 24-word access code with support. Your account ID (the n1... string) is what we need; the access code is yours alone.
