How to Check for DNS or IP Leaks
Even when using a VPN, your real IP address or DNS requests can sometimes “leak,” revealing your location or activity. You can test for leaks using sites like ipleak.net or dnsleaktest.com.
Step 1: Connect to Your VPN
Before testing, make sure your VPN is active and connected to a server. Choose a server in another country so the results are easier to verify.
Step 2: Run a Leak Test
Open a site like ipleak.net. It will automatically run several tests and display results about your network connection.
What Each Test Shows
1. Public IP Address
Shows the IP address websites see.
Expected: The VPN server’s IP and country.
Leak sign: Your real IP or actual location appears.
2. DNS Leak Test
Shows which DNS servers your device uses to look up websites.
Expected: DNS servers from your VPN or in the VPN’s location.
Leak sign: Your ISP’s DNS or servers in your real location appear.
3. WebRTC Leak Test (Optional)
Some browsers reveal your IP through WebRTC.
Expected: Only the VPN IP is shown.
Leak sign: Your real IP appears here.
