Tor proved anonymous routing was possible. NymVPN is the next step: it keeps Tor's spirit but closes the two weaknesses two decades of research have exposed, using a mixnet for metadata protection and token incentives to keep the network honest.
What Tor solved, and what it didn't
Tor, designed in the early 2000s, wraps your traffic in layers of encryption and passes it through three volunteer relays. It's still a vital tool for activists and journalists. But two structural weaknesses remain:
- Timing analysis. An observer watching both ends of a Tor circuit can correlate packet timing and size to deanonymize you, no encryption-breaking required.
- Sybil attacks. Tor runs on volunteers. An adversary who operates enough relays can deanonymize users who route through them, and without incentives the relay pool is hard to grow safely.
How NymVPN closes both gaps
NymVPN's Anonymous mode routes you through five hops in a Noise Generating Mixnet. Unlike Tor's three-relay circuit, it mixes your packets with other users' at each hop, floods the network with cover traffic so volume stops being a signal, and adds small random delays that break timing correlation. The result is unlinkability against a global passive adversary, the toughest threat model in the field, which Tor cannot promise.
On the Sybil side, NymVPN operators earn $NYM for their work. That gives them a stake in the network's integrity and keeps the operator pool large and diverse enough to make Sybil attacks too expensive to be worth it.
大蒜路由（I2P、Freenet）怎么样？
Garlic routing bundles multiple messages into one encrypted "bulb," which helps throughput but doesn't fix the timing-correlation weakness a mixnet is built to solve. NymVPN takes the lessons of onion and garlic routing and goes further with active noise.
NymVPN or Tor?
- Everyday browsing and streaming: NymVPN Fast mode, far quicker than Tor and still decentralized.
- High-stakes anonymity: NymVPN Anonymous mode, stronger against traffic analysis than onion routing.
- .onion services: Tor is still the tool. NymVPN doesn't replace the hidden-service ecosystem.
- Both at once: run Tor over NymVPN for an extra layer. 参阅文章 Tor 是否可以和 NymVPN 一起使用？
The catch: Anonymous mode is slower than Tor for general browsing, because the noise that resists surveillance is also what adds latency. For most use, Fast mode is the right call and stays decentralized, encrypted, and unable to log anything meaningful. More on the design in the NymVPN litepaper.
