Speed on NymVPN depends mostly on your mode. Fast mode is built for everyday speed and should feel close to your normal connection, so if it's consistently slow, something is usually fixable. Anonymous (mixnet) mode is slower on purpose: five hops with added privacy protections. Here's how to fix most slow-speed cases.
First, check your mode
Anonymous mode routes through five mixnet nodes with cover traffic and timing protection, so some slowdown is normal. For streaming, downloads, or everyday browsing, switch to Fast mode, which uses WireGuard, one of the fastest protocols around. See What's the difference between NymVPN Fast & Anonymous mode?
Troubleshooting Fast mode
- Measure your baseline. Speed-test with the VPN off, then on. If your base connection is slow, the VPN can't fix that. See How do I test the VPN speed and performance?
- Try a different exit country. A nearby, less busy exit is usually faster. See Best NymVPN server location.
- Reconnect. This picks new nodes and often clears a slow route.
- Turn off QUIC if you don't need it. It's an anti-censorship feature that adds overhead; outside a censored region, disable it under Settings > Anti-censorship > QUIC.
- Check your network. Wi-Fi congestion, weak signal, or a busy cell network slows everything. Try another network.
- Restart the app to clear stuck connections.
- On Linux in a VM or over mobile tethering? Both have shown slower speeds that trace to the setup, not the VPN. Try a direct connection or Linux on real hardware.
Slow to connect, not slow once connected?
That's usually Stealth Connect, which makes connecting harder to block at the cost of slower starts. If you don't need it on your network, disable it in Settings.

Related questions
Why is Anonymous mode slower by design?
Five hops plus mixnet protections that defeat traffic analysis cost time. The team keeps optimizing it without weakening privacy.
Could the MTU be the problem?
Rarely. NymVPN sets conservative per-platform MTU values automatically. See How is the MTU set for NymVPN?
One site is slow but everything else is fine. Why?
Usually the service reacting to your exit location, not a speed issue. See Why are certain online services not working with NymVPN?
